Actually, the bootup problem is different - running '/etc/init.d/nscd start' will silently fail - the following messages appear in syslog:
/var/run/nscd/nscd.pid: No such file or directory /var/run/nscd/socket: No such file or directory Creating /var/run/nscd fixes this problem, but this needs to be done every time the system boots.
