After replacing my adapter (with an identical model), the drop after a
few minutes and other problems originally reported went away.  So, I
guess, that's what I'd recommend, too.

However, I still have problems with high ping times.  The "solution" to
that is to disable power management in the iwlwifi driver.

When I asked why Dell ships an Ubuntu laptop with a wireless adapter
known to have issues, the reply was along the lines of: to earn the
"Ultrabook" moniker it must ship with a Centrino adapter.  Just FYI.
