Public bug reported:

Until recently, when you clicked on the launcher icon of an application
of which you had more than one window open, you used to be able to know
how many open window you had because there were N small white arrows on
the left side of the icon, N being the number of open widnow.

Since recently, there is always only one white arrow (which by the way
is thinner than before), no matter how many open widnows the application
has.
