It was just a regular left click. I just checked it again, though, and now the new tab isn't opening; something must have been changed since I first posted.
Also, it seems that the new message window isn't minimized; it is just in the background. The Chromium window half-loses focus (it is no longer displayed in the top panel), but it remains on top.
