Thanks for the suggestion.  I don't know how/if I can apply the update,
since I don't have windows installed and hadn't updated the BIOS prior
to removing windows.

This problem still persists, even though I've updated to RR 13.04,
although with slightly different symptoms.  The touchpad is detected as
"SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" (command: xinput list) even when it is
frozen instead of PS/2 Generic.  It seems like I can now *sometimes*
solve the problem and can get the trackpad to work by putting the
computer to sleep and waking it.  However, on other occassions, shutting
the computer down and restarting repeatedly doesn't do anything - and
will sometimes even result in my not being able to use the keyboard
and/or click with an external usb mouse (even though I can move the
mouse with an external usb mouse).
