Don't see that as the case for vlc or any other source depending on 
libav shared libs.
Ubuntu repo packages always have different libav* dep versions for the 
non-extra & extra.
Currently most will have >=6:0.8.3.1~ for non-extra & the version built 
off of for the extra

Where 6:0.8.3.1~ comes from i've no clue

In any event don't see why an extra 30 sec's or so isn't spent to do a 
libav-extra build right after  doing  an upgrade to libav
