I confirm that it worked for me with the piix module. Out-of-the-box, the DVD drive doesn't work under my Kubuntu.
I inserted a CD and couldn't read the content, it wasn't mounted, and there was no /dev/hd* or sd* other than sda (the hard disk). Then I typed sudo modprobe piix in a terminal and the drive began to read the CD, and Kubuntu popep up the content in a new windows.
