The problem seems to have gone away! Now, as before, I was running 'bundle --help' in xfce-terminal. I have also tried at the console, but I cannot reproduce it any more in either environment.
At the time I was also experiencing lots of strange freeze-ups in which applications and console sessions would not launch and the GUI would misbehave and I would have to force a shutdown from the power button. I believe this misbehaviour was connected to a backup was doing to an NTFS volume.
