>=UEFI 2.3.1 is the specification demanded by Windows 8 for Secure Boot purposes. I still think Ubuntu should still be able to install on a non secure boot capable system using EFI. There appears to be no other option than >=2.3.1 UEFI or BIOS when trying to install Ubuntu EFI mode.
