You are right Kaj, but that was not the problem in this case. The drive
is recognised correctly when I plug it directly into the motherboard. As
far as I can tell from my afternoon shopping yesterday most of the
enclosures on the market — certainly most of the cheaper ones — have
defective firmware of this sort, but many retailers aren't up front
about it. The only solution is to google the word "capacity" when you
are researching which enclosure to buy.
