I have the same problem and just tested with the latest mainline kernel [0]. The problem wasn't fixed.
I also tried different propietary driver versions (I am using fglrx) and the open source radeon driver, both of which showed the same wrong behaviour. I think I should be able to fix the problem by just forcing a mode with a manually written xorg.conf and will try that later.
