I just experienced this problem in Kubuntu 13.10. Came across this bug page through http://askubuntu.com/questions/128265/mouse-pointer- touchpad-getting-stuck-often-in-12-04 where the suggested solution of ctrl+alt+f2 then back to f7 fixed the issue. I did not try pressing escape
