I tested this in a quantal virtual machine that was running kernel 3.5.0-39, by first installing apt from quantal-proposed, then disabling proposed and using 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to install kernel version 3.5.0-40. I then rebooted and enabled proposed again, from which I then used 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to update to kernel version 3.5.0-41. Then I rebooted again and ran 'sudo apt-get autoremove --purge' and did not see kernel version 3.5.0-39 in the list of packages to be removed.
