Simply running the HP Support Assistant to update the BIOS worked for
me. I have an HP Pavilion dv7. The LED next to the power adapter was
blinking white, and neither ubuntu nor windows could find the battery.
I rebooted into windows 7, ran the HP Support Assistant a few times,
which installed at least one BIOS update. I shut down, removed and re-
inserted the battery, then removed and re-inserted the AC power adapter.
The LED next to the power adapter turned orange, indicating charging.
Finally, I booted windows and the taskbar indicates that the battery is
charging. I haven't booted ubuntu yet, but I am optimistic that the
issue is resolved.
