OK, I think I may be onto something. The only thing that comes close to the error message are problems with wireless.
Before I go further, vlc is crashing on startup because ir support is now enabled. http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1258711 makes mention of Atheros issues "est incompatible avec un grand nombre de config et particulièrement avec les cartes Atheros". So I looked for an Atheros module with: lsmod | grep ath ath5k 134963 0 ath 19187 1 ath5k mac80211 513247 1 ath5k cfg80211 401436 3 ath,ath5k,mac80211 After sudo rmmod ath5k I can open and run vlc (and Totem). Having done all that, I can again invoke a kernel panic by using the remote, namely with the up button, but at least it's manageable, at least as long you don't use the ir remote. According to Cara-bump on the thread quoted, Atheros issues started with kernel 3.8 or so. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1222070 Title: Kernel Panic --not syncing fatal exception in interrupt To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1222070/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
