The code I'm working on is targeted for an embedded system using buildroot. During development and debugging it is easier to compile it for the host system which is running Ubuntu. The embedded system is for various reasons using statically linked binaries and it would be nice to compile it more or less the same way. In the general case developers might want to create static binaries due to running under a chroot, no possibility to install packages/.so files on customers machines or 32/64 bit mismatch between shipped binary and host system.
