Due to a hard drive crash I have since reinstalled / upgraded to: kernel: 3.8.0-31-generic, OS: Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS, Desktop: Gnome3, Gnome Shell 3.4.1
...and this problem doesn't appear to be affecting the system any more.
