Under 13.10beta2 (lightdm 1.8.0), this bug is made even worse as lightdm ignores the greeter-show-manual-login=true setting completely => NIS users cannot log in at all. See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1234856
