I am sorry, but I am unable to reproduce it even with my current laptop, which is running Edgy Eft. The phenomenon I had reported was visible in my earlier laptop. I have a feeling that this was being caused by an unusual interaction between the ACPI layer in the firmware and the GNOME power manager. I do not know how to reproduce it now.
