.bashrc "problem" solved. For no reason I can understand, xterm*loginShell was set to TRUE in .Xresources. And that means, that bash will not invoke .bashrc. (I guess zillions of beginners have been tricked by that setting in other distros, since you first need to get the idea of looking there.)
