I found the problem with the 3.2.0 kernel: the linux-firmware package distributes the old realtek firmware that doesn't work with the new drivers that went in the kernel on 1/4/2013. I filed a bug for it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1239414
