Please try using an alternate CD (that's the same but with a text
installer instead of loading Ubuntu Live). If it works with it the
problem is probably just that your system hasn't enough resources for
the Live mode.
Also, if what you want to do is upgrade a previous Ubuntu installation,
why don't you just make use of update-manager?
