Happens on Thinkpad t42 with Ubuntu 12.04.03. With alsamixer -> 'F6' -> "29 ThinkPad Console Audio Control" I can see current level of hardware mixer and that hotkeys are working (I can also hear they really affcets volume level). But there are no on-screen- notification.
