In http://packages.ubuntu.com/ you can search for package or package
content.
The default settings for searching a package are:
Search on Package names only
Allows searching on subwords
with these settings, the search of kinit returns bootcd-mkinitramfs
which is the only package which answers to the search criteria (there is
no package called kinit, and kinit is a subword of bootcd-mkinitramfs).
The correct way to search for the package containing kinit is using "Search the
contents of packages".
Searching kinit here returns:
usr/lib/klibc/bin/kinit libs/klibc-utils
which you have indeed installed.
