Public bug reported: Since 12.04 upgrade and continuing with 13.10, gnome-alsamixer, alsamixer, and xfce4-mixer cannot un-mute playback speakers although the apps suggest they have been unmuted.
I have an HDA Intel sound card (ALC883). Alsamixergui is the only one that works by clicking the speaker icons at the top to make them green. When I unmute using the other apps, in Alsamixergui the speakers stay white signifying that the playback is not actually unmuted and the sound does not work. This is fairly critical and was reported for 12.04: no sound, no music, not Skype, etc. I hope this is going to be fixed. Not sure if it is actually the apps' fault or pulseaudio's (also reported there) or xfce4-mixer. Please fix!
