It's now Thursday morning and I worked at home yesterday. When I powered on my work PC this morning I did not have the problem, though my desktop background is blank/black (it should be an image). I checked my mail and opened Firefox, and periodically checked my desktop and all was fine - no smearing. Then I opened Nemo and the smearing started right away. The reason I mention the bit about working at home yesterday is that I'm pretty sure that if I reboot (even shutdown and boot), I will get the smearing straight away even without starting Nemo. It only seems to be smear free if my PC is powered off at least over night. I doesn't make sense to me but there it is.
