Ah yes? But it doesn't work any better now... Here on Lubuntu Saucy, I cannot use *any* custom setxkbmap settings! The right part of the UI, "Advanced setxkbmap options" is inaccessible and cannot be dropped down at all!
And as you say, the panel item will override everything set by setxkbmap. For instance, I tried a $ setxkbmap -option compose:caps (to give that ever-useless caps lock key a sensible job) But whilst this worked perfectly back then on Debian, here it fails entirely. And the GUI is borked.
