Typo in previous post should read "The hard drive (before 13.04) was associated with an nvidia card."
I removed some files related to nvidia configuration (no nvidia or nouveau is installed or loaded). Same issue continues. I believe nvidia is totally purged. lspci and Xorg.0.log don't agree on card details, might be useful: lspci -nn | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
