Actually, really strange, the bug just disappeared.  Even with the Intel
graphics, I cannot crash X11 any more.  Therefore, I cannot try that fix
any more, either.

I didn't even change anything, but here is what may have "fixed" the
problem: My machine (Lenovo W500) has two graphics cards, Intel and ATI.
I usually use Intel.  To troubleshoot this issue, I changed to ATI (via
BIOS).  After changing back to Intel, the bug was gone from my system.

I don't think the reboot did it, as I rebooted before, which didn't fix
the problem.  Maybe by booting with ATI, some X11 configuration files
were changed, that for whatever reason prevented this bug from
materializing, even after switching back to Intel.

Anyway, thanks for looking into this, and for giving such a prompt
reply.
