Can you please provide the following:
 ls -l /sys/firmware
 dpkg -l | grep grub
 dpkg -l | grep shim

The error you're getting seems to suggest you have shim-signed installed
on a non-UEFI system, in which case it'd be safe to remove, but I'd
prefer to make sure of this since removing shim-signed on a UEFI system
will lead to the machine to fail to boot entirely.
