Sorry for interfering with my n00biness. But this "downgrade" you discuss, is that the action of removing the old sound indicator from the panel and replace it? That's what i did after the upgrade 13.04 -> 13.10, and my indicator is working fine (except the audacious control is gone, but i don't miss it) and my sound works perfect.
