Alberto: Was using /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common unreliable?
foolishchild: Woah! I didn't say that the bug was definitely in linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20. You never said you had installed envy until after I changed the component... You can do what you like to your system but your support options change after you use certain 3rd party tools/software even if you try and remove them (there will always be suspicion that later issues are related and it takes a fair amount of work to prove things one way or another). Things installed outside of Ubuntu mean you have to use the methods outlined on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport for support. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia for a list of other places.
