Public bug reported:

Gutsy Tribe 4 20070811 and 20070814 do not support the IBM Thinkpad R31
LCD graphics screen in normal or in safe graphics mode. Live CD results
in a graphics screen flickering between grey and black. Ctrl-Alt-F1
text mode seems to operate O.K.

Note Gutsy 20070630 supports the LCD screen normally using i810 driver
for Intel 83830 CGC, generic monitor 1024x768, default depth 24.

20070813 xorg.conf reports:
Generic Video Card (! should have recognized Intel 8380!)
Default depth 24
No screen resolution at all!

The text in xorg.conf says to try the command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg results in:
"xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possibly-customised configuration
file; backup in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.20070815014500"
and then drops back to the [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ prompt without running the
dpkg-reconfigure.

If I remove the -phigh, dpkg-reconfigure runs. Using the driver i810, memory
32768, 1024x768, depth 24 the screen came up with error: "User Switcher" has
quit unexpectedly.
Firefox ran O.K. to the internet.

I'd guess that Gutsy 20070814 has reverted to an older Debian version of
Xwindows that doesn't even recognize -phigh, prior to Gutsy and even
Feisty which is installed and running (with patches) on the subject R31.

Let me see if I can attach the Xorg.0.log.

Cheers, Jerry
