This problem appears to have completely gone away upon running aptitude
update.

Appending piix to the modules file actually caused me NOT to be able to
boot the machine. I left the disk in the fdd and did an update. I
noticed on subsequent reboots that the fdd was not being spun up as it
was when booting from the LiveCD and after initial install.

My *guess* is that this is a problem with the kernel on the LiveCD.
Presumably the gutsy LiveCD wouldn't have this problem (something I need
to take a look at).
