Public bug reported:

gmailfs can not be mounted or used by a normal user.

sudo mkdir /mnt/gmailfs
sudo chown $USER:$USER /mnt/gmailfs
chmod u+w /mnt/gmailfs

mount -t gmailfs /mnt/gmailfs -o
umask=0022,user,uid=1000,username=user,password=pass,fsname=blahblah
(Result: reports error that root is needed)

sudo mount -t gmailfs /mnt/gmailfs -o
umask=0022,user,uid=1000,username=user,password=pass,fsname=blahblah
(Result: still, only root can access the folder at all. It appears like this:)
