So there are approximately 3 possibilities: 1) Some library it's linked with has been fixed/changed 2) Some compiler change has made it go away 3) Perhaps the bug is still there but only triggered if unlucky due to data alignment etc - so you got lucky this time.
bit tricky to track down though; the only thought I've got is try seeing if the binary from 12.04 works on 13.10 (or maybe the other way) then you could try introducing other libraries to see if it follows - but you might hit other issues when trying to do mixes like that.
