I took some severe measures (dpkg remove, ignore dependencies) to eliminate the audio ppa software from my system and reinstall the base software and kernel modules. Rebooted. Still no luck. Then reinstalled the ppa software with the long line of install code at SoundTroubleshootingProcedure in the Ubuntu Community Documentation. My audio is now working again. Still, took hours and a lot of experimentation to get to this point. It would be better if audio wasn't fragile to occasional hard shutdowns.
