The system seemed to be OK after a (logout and when that didn¹t work a)
restart and a
sudo apt-get install -f

So if that is the criterion you can close the bug.

What I don¹t really like though is that if my parents (who run Ubuntu
installed by me) experienced this they would be lost:
Not only did a fairly cryptical error message pop-up, the updater window
was messed up leaving only the title bar, which was not possible to close.
I guess they would have restarted, and that would be OK bar that they get
an error every time the system tried to update, which (apart from getting
them generally irritated) would eventually leave them with an unsecured
(and potentially unstable) system.
My thought is: If this types of errors happen (which is not really
uncommon) would it not be possible that the updater triggers the commands
you point to? My point is that at the cost of one longer update times you
probably solve some 90% of the cases. Just my 2 cents...

All the best, and thanks for a *very* good QA and support (I hope my
comment did not give the impression that I am in any way disappointed)!
Anders
