I have a GeForce 8600 GT and I have the same problem with same error message.
By default the desktop effect seemed to work when I first compiled the binary drivers, but when I selected "advanced effects" I got an error message "no nvidia card found", so I tried to disable desktop effect but since then I never been able to re-enable it, I always get the no nvidia card message.. As for the restricted drivers manager it worked once on my old pc with my GeForce 7600 (on feisty) but failed to recognize my 8600 (on gutsy).
