With kernel 3.13.0-5.20 (Ubuntu 14.04), the command "sudo xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1680x1050" does nothing. With kernels drm-intel-nightly/2014-01-23-trusty and drm-intel-nightly/2014-01-29-trusty, I am able to use xrandr without any problem.
