The problem with not fixing it is that the current behavior *is*
atrocious for muscle memory/user habit, as (at least on Mac OS X, I
can't speak for other OSes) currently, Firefox is the only browser that
doesn't open a new tab when pressing Cmd+Return. This (and several other
little things that are beyond the scope of this bug) makes it very hard
for new users to switch to Firefox from e.g. Safari, where Cmd+Return
means Open URL in a new tab (and, FWIW, Cmd+click means Open link in a
new tab, Alt+Return means Download URL, and Alt+click means Download
link.)

I believe you should at the very least consider parity with other
browsers / UX integration with the platform.

This is a summary of the current behavior of the three main browsers on
OS X:

Browser | Cmd-Return | Alt-Return | Cmd-click |
Alt-click
Safari | Open in a new tab | [Download URL] | Open in a new tab |
Download link
Chrome(Chromium) | Open in a new tab | Open in a new tab | Open in a new tab |
Download link
Firefox | [Auto-completion] | Open in a new tab | Open in a new tab |
[Nothing?]
