Public bug reported:

When installing Gutsy Gibbon, installation fails with message: The ext3
file system creation in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda) failed.

It seems that as the installer is autodetecting the drives, gnome-
volume-manager automatically mounts them, therefore preventing an ext3
partition to be made on the device.

The workaround I used was to go into System Monitor and manually kill
gnome-volume-manager.

After I did this, installation continued successfully.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Make sure you have a SATA drive in your computer
2) Run the Ubuntu Installer
3) You should encounter the error
