As the original reporter I want to apologise to all of the affected people here - I was not aware that my comment that I don't own the hardware anymore will result in the bug being closed as "won't fix".
Hopefully the patch will make it to the kernel and the fix will reach Ubuntu anyway. If not then I can offer this: If anyone with the NP900X3B laptop is willing to test actually the latest builds mentioned in Christopher M.
