I do that everyday... unfortunately the problem exits still... Could it be that installing the NVIDIA drivers did something unexpected. I had to install them because the 'suspend' feature is missing from the (otherwise better) nouveau...
$ lspci ... 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G84M [GeForce 8600M GT] (rev a1) ... Would reinstalling the ubuntu-desktop package resolve this?
