Guess what, this isn't even limited to Gmail. It happens on my own IMAP server as well. It's running Dovecot on Linux. See bug 712595. Offline and online mode does not help. Changing folders does not work. Only restarting Thunderbird helps for sure. Until then, I regularly see unread or read messages in my inbox at home that I've already read and/or deleted through webmail or smartphone. I also have the impression that it's not a long delay, but instead it's a now or never. Disabling IDLE is definitely no option because that's the future (well, present already) and what everybody else uses successfully. I have the impression that there's some race condition inside Thunderbird that nobody will ever be able to find without rewriting the whole thing.
