You've almost certain configured your proxy wrong if you only configure
it for your interactive login session.  Many processes involved do not
run as interactive login commands.  See

bash-profile for a more in-depth treatment.

The right way to set up a proxy is to open your Systems Settings panel,
go to Network Settings, and select the Network Proxy pane.  Choose the
Manual Method and enter your settings there.
