Thanks for the response Seth. I've emailed the developer (Hiroyuki) informing him of this bug and requesting his assistance. If he is able to assist and has time, then we should expect him to create a launchpad account and respond to this bug report.
I've been unable to find the specific commits mentioned in his news item. I've looked in his version control system ( http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/redmine/projects/sylpheed ). Hopefully he'll join us here and link to those commits. I'm not a skilled C developer so I wont be able to create the patches myself.
