Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy I have had numerous problems with
both sleep and hibernate. Sleep appears to work perfectly, but every
time I resume my laptop gnome power manager insists that my laptop
failed to sleep by popping up a warning bubble telling me to visit the
quirks website. Hibernate however has totally ceased to function. If I
tell the laptop to hibernate it starts going through the process the
screen momentarily flicks to a text console and then immediately flicks
back to X windows and gnome power manager (correctly) tells me hibernate
failed. Both Sleep and hibernate worked flawlessly in previous Ubuntu
versions.

Here is the output of "uname -a"
Linux scottles-laptop 2.6.22-10-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 22 08:11:52 GMT 2007
i686 GNU/Linux
