I have the same problem on a HP nc6320. I received the problem when installing the 23th of August updates and upgrading to kernel 2.6.22-10 (running gutsy). I have not yet checked other kernels, will do and get back to you.
My error is : When i press mute button he mutes at the screen but does not turn the LED off (he did that before) I only get sound through earphones if I boot with earphones in or if I use the earphones. I will try if sound works if i boot 1.) other kernel and 2.) if I boot without earphones plugged in. More info below. Thanks!
