I have the same problem on a HP nc6320. I received the problem when
installing the 23th of August updates and upgrading to kernel 2.6.22-10
(running gutsy). I have not yet checked other kernels, will do and get
back to you.

My error is :

When i press mute button he mutes at the screen but does not turn the LED off 
(he did that before)
I only get sound through earphones if I boot with earphones in or if I use the 
earphones. 
I will try if sound works if i boot 1.) other kernel and 2.) if I boot without 
earphones plugged in.
