I found this link https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-
manager/+bug/1302412 and ran "sudo update-manager" in a terminal  and
was able to successfully run software updater without getting the "You
don't have the required privileges to perform this action" error. Once I
updated and restarted, software updater ran fine, my user was showed as
logged in and when I tried to restart, I was able to, not just log out
like knightscove noted. General performance improved significantly as
well.
